How An Economy Grows and Why It Crashes Review

When I first got How An Economy Grows and Why It Crashes by Peter and Andrew Schiff a few years ago, I finished reading the book the day I got it because I didn’t want to put it down. I usually take my time with a book, read a little here and a little there and finish in a few days (or weeks depending on how long the book it is and how dry the writing is). Not this one though, it was/is THAT good. I’ve since read it several more times.

Peter and his brother Andrew have written a wonderful book that expands and even improves on their father’s classic How An Economy Grows and Why It Doesn’t. This book is an essential teaching tool that everyone needs to read, especially those who hold onto the failed Keynesian views (looking at you Ben Bernanke, or as it relates to this book, Ben Barnacle).

Peter and Andrew have pieced together a simple story, based on the story their father told them, that expertly demonstrates how an economy grows and why it crashes. In doing so, they’ve managed to relate it in such a manner that anyone can read the book and be both entertained and informed.

They never patronize their readers; this is not a political book where they’re bashing any political party, but rather clearly showing failed policies that have been enacted for a century that have led to our present day situation and what is come if things don’t change.

I really cannot recommend this book any more than simply saying “everyone needs to read it.” It’s that simple. Anyone can read this book and understand it and think “that makes a lot of sense, why aren’t the ‘experts’ on TV and in government saying this?”

The book itself is a beautiful hardcover with no dust cover and a solid 233 pages with some great illustrations by Brendan Leach. At $11.83 for the hardback at Amazon.com this is a no-brainer, that price is actually quite a steal. Purchase it today, you will not regret the purchase and you will be learn and be entertained.

A fantastic, must read book.
