This is the final volume, so far, of the French comics to be released in English (all three volumes were just released in English back in October). A fourth volume came out in November in French titled “Hawk.” After finishing this volume, I really hope it doesn’t take another two volumes to come out before the series is printed in English again as I am into this story now.
This one picks up where the second volume left off. This time around, another Assassin named Jonathan Hawk is in an Animus reliving the memories of his ancestor Accipiter. Accipiter is the cousin of Aquilus and is another ancestor of Desmond… so Desmond and Hawk are distant cousins. While Hawk is reliving the memories of Accipiter, Desmond continues to relive the memories of Aquilius. And yes, the story does bring Aquilus and Accipiter together.
The present day stuff, which is again mostly centered on Desmond, continues to be top notch. However, as good as that is, it’s the historical story surrounding Aquilius and Accipiter that is the most interesting this time around. Volume three has the best action sequences of any of the volumes released so far (in English anyway), and it’s all around a better entry in the series than volume two. As has been the case with the actual games, this comic series has gotten better with each new entry.
Again, the writing and the art is wonderful. Especially the art; I think this volume has the best art of the series to date (and all of them have been great, so that’s saying something). The ending is also intriguing. It’s nothing major, so there’s nothing to spoil really, but ends with Jonathan Hawk looking at a file, File 24, that has a picture of the Sphinx with the dialogue “I do have some idea of where we might be going.”
I like Egypt, particularly ancient Egypt, Egyptian mythology, and the pyramids. I’ve wanted to see an Assassin’s Creed game take part in ancient Egypt since completing Assassin’s Creed II. While a game isn’t likely to go there (although I think some cool stories could be told that tie into mythology), it’s at least nice to know that there will be (or is) a story based in the Assassin’s Creed universe taking place in Egypt. I’m anxious to see where the story goes and what Jonathan Hawk’s mission is.
Assassin’s Creed fans should not miss out on this volume (although that goes for the whole series), but it’s also an entertaining enough read that any fan of comics ought to pick up. While the whole series is recommended, this one especially is.
Assassin’s Creed Accipiter gets a five out of five: EXCELLENT.
